Concrete Jersey Barrier

A Jersey Barrier is a concrete wall that separates roadways from motorways. They are designed to ensure that vehicles cannot hit the wrong sides of the road in the event of an incident.

They are also used in the military against car bombs. And are also known in the western United States as K-rails or Traffic Dividers. The Jersey Barrier has a characteristic shape with a fairly sloping part at the bottom and a right-hand continuation. The disadvantage of this barrier shape is the sloping part at the bottom: it causes many so-called 'roll-overs', ie vehicles that will tip over if they hit this sloping part. In the Netherlands, the Jersey Barrier was used until the late 1990s, after which it was largely replaced by the newer Step Barrier.

The Jersey Barrier was developed at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, under the supervision of that state's Department of Transportation. The barrier is also named after that. A typical Jersey Barrier is 3 feet high (91 centimeters) and is made of poured concrete. It is designed to minimize vehicle damage in cases of incidental contact while still preventing vehicle crossovers resulting in a likely head-on collision. Jersey barriers are also used to reroute traffic and protect pedestrians and workers during highway construction. They were mainly designed at a time when ordinary guardrails were not effective during collisions.

Since then, the steel crash barrier has been improved and, if used correctly, it has also been effective in collisions. The disadvantage of a Jersey Barrier is that, especially with concrete highways, such as many built in urban areas in the United States, the highways look quite massive, as one concrete mass. Steel barrier or guard rail is a better option considering the view.
